LISTENING EXAMPLES

Listening Example Guidelines

To fully understand any music class, you must use your ears! The listening examples for this class have been chosen to demonstrate the styles and attributes of American music. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU ACTUALLY LISTEN TO EACH OF THE GIVEN EXAMPLES IN ORDER TO PASS EACH OF THE TESTS.

What to Listen For:

Each chapter will try to emphasize a point (polyphony, timbre, etc.) Please actively listen to each example and try to identify that component. Also, please make a note of the composer, genre, and title of each piece. You may need to listen to each example several times to become familiar with it.

Media Player Specifications:

The listening examples have been designed to play on Windows Media Player. Other media players may also work. If you are having problems with hearing the listening examples, please download Windows Media Player. If you are still having trouble, please contact Online Support at onlinehelp@kaskaskia.edu.

Accessing the examples:

Please be patient when loading listening examples. How quickly you can access them will depend upon your connection speed.

Under the ASSIGMENTS tab you will see the individual weeks. Click on the week to reveal the reading and listening assignments for that week. For example, under WEEK1 you will find the reading assignment and the following:

1.2. Listening Example: #1 - "I Only Have Eyes for You"

Just click on the listening example to begin playback. You may listen to each example as many times as you would like prior to taking the tests.

Listening While Taking Tests/Exams:

Once you begin a test/exam, you are given a time limit in which to complete it. Listening examples will appear as a link at the end of the question. Just click on the link to hear the example. You may listen to the excerpt more than once but remember, the clock is running! You will be asked questions like

“This piece is best described as _________”, “Who composed this piece?”, and “What is the title of this work?”.

That should be it. Good luck!
